Associate Professor and Chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Todd Beer attended the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City on September 17, 2023 where he and a team of others, including alum Lisa Ledvora ’16, collected survey data among the 75,000 participants from a wide variety of social movement organizations.

Beer’s work examines policy preferences among participants in mass mobilization events around the issue of climate change, particularly variations in and predictors of support for technological solutions, like renewable energy, versus more radical social transformations including ideas of EcoSocialism and degrowth.

In 2014 and 2017, Beer and groups of alums collected data at large climate marches in New York City and Washington, DC. Some of his work on this topic is published in Sociological Quarterly. This semester Beer is teaching a course on the topic, Society, Climate Change, and the Environment.

In other news, Beer participated in the “Is climage change a gender issue?” panel discussion during the 8th Annual Women in Science and Healthcare Symposium on September 14, 2023 at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.
