Adult Community Education

At Lake Forest, many courses are open to adult community members for audit.

Lake Forest also offers a pair of graduate programs (Master of Liberal Studies; Master of Arts in Teaching) that might be of interest to degree-seeking adult community members who already hold a bachelor’s degree.

Auditing of Courses (Non-Degree Seeking)

Adult community members who wish to acquaint themselves with a subject without receiving credit may audit a course with the permission of the instructor. Auditors are not subject to the requirements of the course (e.g., no assignments; no grades; no course credit), but they are expected to participate seriously. Examination for course credit is not permitted in an audited course.

Adult community members that have completed a bachelor’s degree are eligible to audit either undergraduate or graduate courses with course instructor approval. Adult community members that do not hold a bachelor’s degree are only eligible to audit undergraduate courses with instructor approval.

Adult community members who are looking to audit a course must complete the non-degree application to audit. These auditors are not required to submit a transcript. The cost to audit is $700 per class. Contact Joy Markee at jmarkee@lakeforest.edu for more information.

Adult community members that have completed a bachelor’s degree might be interested in seeking a graduate degree. To learn more about our graduate programs, please visit the following:

If you are interested in the MLS program, but would like to begin as an auditor, please contact the Director of the MLS program (Prof. Cynthia Hahn: hahn@lakeforest.edu) to learn more about this path.

Professional Licensure or Teaching Endorsements (Non-Degree Seeking; For-Credit)

Adult community members that have completed a bachelor’s degree might seek to enroll in credit-based undergraduate or graduate coursework toward additional professional licensure or endorsement. To learn more about these options, please visit the following:

For questions, please contact Adrienne Thoms (thoms@lakeforest.edu) or Prof. Desmond Odugu (odugu@lakeforest.edu) in the Education Department.
