Mizraim Hernandez ’22 was honored this week as a 2021 Student Lincoln Laureate by The Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

Every fall, an outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois is awarded the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award. In the spirit of Lincoln, Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.

Each member of the 2021 class of student laureates will receive a $500 check from the Lincoln Academy, a challenge coin, a Lincoln medallion, and a certificate of merit and letter signed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Hernandez, who is majoring in international relations and minoring in business, transferred to Lake Forest from College of Lake County during the COVID pandemic.

A resident of nearby Waukegan, Illinois, Hernandez said Lake Forest College was “the best option for me since I could continue to give back to the Lake County community.”

Among other activities at Lake Forest, Hernandez helped found the student organization US, the Undocumented Student empowerment group. He currently serves as co-president of the organization.

“Being named a 2021 Lincoln Laureate is a great honor,” Hernandez said. He appreciates that the award honors “the great citizens of today and celebrates the great citizens of tomorrow. The best part of this is that I’m not even a US citizen. This made the award a lot more memorable and meaningful.”
