Artist and dancer BONES dancing on a Black Lives Matter mural in Brooklyn, New York
February 16, 2021

In recognition of Black History Month, we would like to highlight Jonathan Atkin '71 who recently photographed Black Lives Matter murals in several cities using his fleet of drones.

Specializing in aerial media, Jonathan captures dynamic images often portraying other artists and their art from a unique perspective. During his time at the College, Jonathan met multiple artists of color, including dancers, photographers, writers, and choreographers, many of whom he has remained close with through the years.

During his career as a freelance photographer for various publications including The New York Times, “[he] broke the ‘glass ceiling’ often, with photos that included people of color in articles where that inclusion was not expected, and at times  prevented.” Jonathan's ongoing project, Hero Project, is a combination of his two passions—historic ships and dance—resulting in celebratory art that is expressive and full of life.
