Hear from College professors on their plans for engaging with students once the semester is under way.

From art to finance, to physics, to theater, the Lake Forest College faculty has designed an exciting set of fall semester courses that will be taught remotely to students in locations around the world. The entire curriculum is moving online for the benefit of students who cannot come to campus due to the coronavirus.

In late July, the College made the difficult decision to shift to a non-residential fall semester in which all courses will be taught remotely. “The decision was disappointing to everyone,” explained President Stephen D. Schutt, “but with positive COVID cases surging across the nation, this was the only way to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.”

Fortunately, Lake Forest professors—among the most talented and creative faculty in the country—jumped to the occasion. They have organized nearly 400 fall semester courses to engage, connect, and meet the needs of students everywhere. Now, more than ever, professors are committed to bringing their individualized teaching to the remote environment.

Connecting with students is what the Lake Forest experience is all about. Our faculty are dedicated to creating relationships with their students, and they recognize that students’ living situations, responsibilities, and access to technology differ. By addressing the needs of all students, faculty will balance synchronous instruction with resources for those who need to learn asynchronously by holding regular office hours, providing academic support, and advising via Zoom.

This will be a great fall for Lake Forest students,” Krebs Provost and Dean of the Faculty Davis Schneiderman summed up. “Our faculty have received extensive training for the semester ahead, they are committed to support every student in our virtual environment, and the College has made major technology investments to help them do so.” This individualized attention remains a foundational aspect of the experience at Lake Forest College, whether in-person on campus or fully remote.
