Congratulations to the Class of 2021
Due to COVID restrictions, two Commencement ceremonies divided by alphabet were held for this year’s graduates on May 18, 2021.
The ceremonies took place on the College’s new Mohr Field on South Campus. Graduates were seated six feet apart in front of the stage and their guests were seated in two-person, socially distanced pods behind them.
In all, there were 340 graduates who received bachelor’s degrees, 13 Master of Arts in Teaching recipients, and one Master of Liberal Studies recipient.
In his opening address, Lake Forest College President Stephen D. Schutt welcomed the graduates and guests acknowledging how “very happy” he was to see everyone “at the end of this long, strange academic year.”
Due to the global pandemic, campus remained closed during the fall 2020 semester with remote learning. Campus reopened for the spring 2021 semester with on-campus living, a combination of in-person and remote learning, and a modified athletic season.
“I’ve never been more impressed than I am today by a group of Lake Forest College graduates. You have persevered in an inspiring way for all of us through the most difficult year anyone here can imagine,” Schutt said.
Reflecting on the burden the global pandemic placed on the graduates, Schutt praised their resilience.
“You have what it takes to make it through very hard times. You are talented, strong, resilient, and I have great confidence in your abiity to weather any future storms that blow your way,” he said.
In his address, senior class speaker Diayan Rajamohan ’21 reflected on the local and global focus on diversity the Class of 2021 faced.
“We rallied for each other, we fought for each other, we supported each other, and we rose to the top with each other,” Rajamohan said. “Together we fought hate, we found love, and today we get to cross this stage knowing that every part of our intersecting identities has left an imprint on one another.”
