Career-A-Palooza: Seen and Heard: The BIPOC Experience in the Workplace

Hear from a panel of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) alumni professionals discussing how to navigate the internship/job search process and finding success in the workplace as a person of color.

Topics will include overcoming challenges, identifying allies, and recognizing inclusive work environments. Featuring Stephanie Valtierra '08, Senior Program Coordinator, Northwestern University, Kwasi Akowuah '20, Financial Product Specialist, Morningstar, Cassia Baker '15, Associate Director of Corporate Relations, The Woodruff Arts Center, and Kristofer Korth '16, Sales Engineer with Evoqua Water Technologies.

Stephanie Valtierra '08, PhD

Stephanie Valtierra, Sr. Program Coordinator at the Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience (NUIN) Program, is a PhD trained neuroscientist. After moving out of academic research, she worked in career development/student support and more recently, as an academic administrator. Stephanie is a member of the NUIN DEI committee, which aims to enroll, retain, and support students who represent the diversity of society. She enjoys mentoring students and has a passion for helping others achieve their objectives. Stephanie has a BA in Biology from Lake Forest College and a PhD in Neuroscience from Northwestern University.

Cassia Baker '15

 Ms. Baker is a Project & Relationship Management professional with experience in the Chicago and Atlanta markets. She previously project managed a grant focused on cybersecurity, impacting a $7.1 billion dollar sector. She also has extensive board and task force experience. She has served as a frontline fundraiser for the Design Industry Fighting Aids, a 501(c)(3) in Chicago, where she serves as a member of the board of directors. She has also served on a task force focused on defense, cybersecurity, and technology. Cassia holds a B.A. in International Relations and Art History from Lake Forest College, Magna Cum Laude. She was inducted into Phi Sigma Alpha and Omicron Delta Kappa. While at Lake Forest College, Cassia served as a Resident Assistant for Blackstone Hall and the Chicago Loop Program, as well as working on campus in the Office of Student Affairs. Cassia interned at an auction house in Chicago and studied abroad in London and Florence. 

Kristofer Korth '16

Kristofer (Kris) Korth, Sales Engineer with Evoqua Water Technologies, has spent the last 5 years bringing sustainable solutions to his customers across multiple industries including Power, Oil & Gas, Refining, and Municipal markets. He is a team-oriented individual who excels at collaborating with internal and external groups to achieve project goals. During his time at Lake Forest College, Kris was an active member of the Swimming and Diving team and was elected Captain his senior year. Additionally, he was a Student Research Scholar at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department during the 2014 and 2015 summers. Kris graduated from Lake Forest College in 2016 with a BA in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Environmental Studies.

Kwasi Akowuah '20

Kwasi Akowuah is a Financial Product Specialist at Morningstar. He is a multi-faceted entry-level analyst dedicated to innovative problem solving and social impact. Kwasi is a charismatic team player with a self-driven attitude towards  growth and an interest in data analytics.  He has certified experience in advanced Excel and has experience in client support, asset management, insurance, consulting and banking. Kwasi holds a B.A. in Economics from Lake Forest College. While at Lake Forest College, Kwasi was very active on campus in a number of organizations as well as held a number of leadership roles including, Student Academic Advisory Council for Economics, Business and Finance, Student Academic Advisory Council for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Executive Vice President of Student Programming Board, Vice President of International Student Organization and First Connection Coordinator. He also received the Anita Chen Li’51 Prize for Academic Distinction and Community Service.
