Bob Knuth nominated for prestigious Chicago theater Jeff Award
Director of Theater Bob Knuth has been nominated for a 2022-2023 Equity Jeff Award for his work outside the College on the play Clue: Murder, Madness, Mystery and Mayhem based on the iconic boardgame.
Clue ran October 13, 2022 through January 1, 2023 at Mercury Theater Chicago. As scenic designer for the play, Knuth convincingly brought to life such iconic Clue rooms as the kitchen, the billiard room, and the ballroom.
In her review of the play, Rachel Weinberg of BroadwayWorld.com noted: “As befits the genre, Bob Knuth’s set design involves many doors, secret passages, and falling objects that are the physical embodiment of farce. Knuth’s set also makes the most of Mercury’s intimate stage with immensely clever set transformations and surprises.”
In addition to his role as Director of Theater, Knuth teaches stagecraft and serves as resident designer and technical director at the College.
“This is the first time in recent memory that one of our faculty has been nominated for such a prestigious award and we’re thrilled,” Associate Professor of Theater and Performance Studies and Chair of the Department of Theater Chloe Johnston said.
For more than 50 years, the Jeff Awards—considered Chicago’s version of Broadway’s Tony Awards—have celebrated the vitality of Chicago area theater. Annually, the Jeff Awards evaluates over 250 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies highlighting artistic and technical excellence over the past season. The 2023 Equity Awards will be announced at a gala on October 2, 2023.
