What drew you to Lake Forest College?
I knew that I wanted a liberal arts education and to be close to a big city, and Lake Forest College fit my criteria perfectly. Being able to have access to the big city stuck out to me as I grew up in a pretty small town with no big cities nearby. After my overnight visit I knew that I would be comfortable living at Lake Forest!
Have you had experiences here—besides your classes—that have helped prepare you for your future?
Theater productions at LFC have taught me to manage my time and my head while doing many different things. Each time we come to rehearsal, were expected to give 100% and leave everything at the door, even if you are just coming from writing a 10 page paper on the Renaissance (which is a real experience I've had it was rough). I've learned that preparation is the key to whatever activity I engage in, and I plan on maintaining this mindset!
How are you handling the sudden change and transition to online learning?
For the most part I think the transition has gone smoothly. I'm lucky to be close to my family and I enjoy watching movies with my mom after a long day sitting in front of my computer. The key for me has been to lean in to what is most interesting about whatever material I'm given each day. Coming to a zoom discussion with questions or ideas on things that stick out to me from readings makes what I'm doing feel productive.
What do you do in your free time?
I've always loved skateboarding and it's a great way to clear my head while also doing something active. During COVID, I've been reading a lot of Jack Kerouac which has fueled me with optimism and love for my friends. Also, now that I'm at home I've been trying to get better at cooking, which has been disastrous at times but I'm definitely enjoying it. If anyone has any tips for Chicken Parm let me know!
What are your plans after graduation?
As of right now I'm looking towards getting a teaching degree to become a middle school history teacher. I've also left working at a museum as an archivist on the table.
Any advice for new Foresters?
Join as many clubs as you think you can (like an obnoxious amount)! It gives you a good chance to discover new things that you may be interested in. Not to mention it's a great way to connect with people who have similar interests as you. After joining WMXM Radio I became obsessed, and it's been one of my favorite activities at LFC.
What has been your favorite memory at Lake Forest College?
I have such a big smile on my face writing this because I get to sweep through the 20,000 favorite memories that I have. One of my favorite memories was teaching my roommate how to ride a skateboard inside of our dorm my freshman year. Slowly but surely (and with a few bruises) he picked it up and by the end of the year we were riding to the beach to watch sunsets on Lake Michigan.
Parting words?
Remember to take a break every once and awhile. You probably deserve it and you'll be more productive in the long run. Also, keep falling in love with things!
