Eukaryon Volume 16

An  UNDERGRADUATE  JOURNAL  of LIFE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP  at  LAKE FOREST COLLEGE

ABOUT THE COVER ARTWORK “Hippocampus” by Philip Freund “The concept of Form and Function is central to biology, and in fact all of the hard sciences. From the selective pore of an ion channel, chromatin organization, cell compartmentalization and size regulation, to tissue structure, organ and organ system connectivity, and gross anatomy, form in life is intrinsically tied to biological function. I took this photograph from the floor of Antelope Canyon, in the northern Navajo Nation, Arizona. The slot canyon was formed when rainwater slowly eroded sandstone, leading to a narrow but deep cut in the earth. The canyon, just like life, is full of diverse forms that never cease to amaze. This picture in particular is significant to me because it shows light shining through the roof of the canyon, which when viewed at just the right angle shows the outline of a seahorse, known in Greek mythology (and neuroscience) as a hippocampus. As a brain structure, the hippocampus is quite elegant, and its form is intertwined with the functional connectivity of neurons within. As we observe the world around us, it is good to take a moment and appreciate the vast array of forms and functions that make life both possible and beautiful.”

Eukaryon  is an award-winning undergraduate research journal that publishes the very best of life science scholarship conducted at Lake Forest College within its research-rich classrooms and faculty labs. The journal is governed, peer-reviewed, and published by an undergraduate editorial board.

Dear Readers, On behalf of the Eukayon editorial board, I would like to thank you for your enormous and remarkable support in the successful completion of an astonishing journal this year. Eukayon would not have seen its 16th consecutive year without your continued support. Every year the dedicated team members of Eukayon editorial boards strive to showcase the life sciences scholarship at Lake Forest College, working tirelessly to make the upcoming edition the best that it can be. This year, we received an outstanding number of articles from various branches of the life sciences, including articles from thought-provoking research projects, academic scholarship and educational features articles. This year's theme, “Form and Function”, was inspired by the structure and collaboration among each editorial board, the backbone of Eukayon, that yields an outstanding product at the end of each season.
