ABOUT THE COVER ARTWORK

“NORTHERN LIGHTS” BY MATTHEW WEIDNER ’17

“On February 27th, 2014 reports were coming in through Lancaster University that there were significant amounts of geomagnetic activity in the atmosphere over the United Kingdom, specifically over Scotland.  Living in St Andrews, Scotland unfortunately leads to some substantial light pollution for how small of a town it is.  The best possible way to catch the Northern Lights that night was to walk roughly 2 miles out of town, and out over the famous St Andrews golf courses.  At roughly 22:30 local time my friends and I had crossed over the Old Course, the New Course, and the Jubilee Course then finally army crawling over fescue and under a barbed wire fence we had made it to one of the most Northerly points of the West Sands.  This was probably the best area to avoid as much manmade light so we could get the best possible image of the Northern Lights.  Unfortunately because of all the urbanization that has been done, in the left hand side of the photo the Royal Air Force base in Leuchars is very visible.  Despite the light pollution from the RAF base, Scotland has done and is continuing to do a great job reducing its carbon emissions. They have reduced their carbon emissions by 23% from the 1990 benchmark, and are targeting reducing it by 42% by 2020.  Scotland’s investment in our future in reducing carbon emissions like these will make it possible to continuously see the Northern Lights and enjoy their sheer magnificence.”
