Itinerary for Mississippi River Trip

Friday March 7 – Saturday March 15, 2014

 Day 0 (Friday 3/7)

• 4pm Depart LFC (drive: ~5 hrs)
• Check into Troy, IL 

Day 1 (Saturday 3/8)

• Breakfast, depart hotel 
• Cahokia Mounds State Park and Museum (Collinsville, IL)
• Piasa Bird (Alton, IL)
• Lunch
• Melvin Price Locks and Dam/National Great Rivers Museum (East Alton, IL)
• Jones Confluence State Park/Bottomlands Conservation Area (West Alton, MO)
• St. Genevieve, MO
• Drive through Kaskaskia, IL
• Dinner, Cape Girardeau, MO
• Check into Memphis, TN

Day 2 (Sunday 3/9)

• 2am Daylight Savings Time begins (spring ahead an hour!)
• Breakfast, depart hotel
• Quapaw Canoe Trip (Shelby Forest, TN – Mud Island, Memphis, TN)
• Dinner and night out on Beale Street, Memphis, TN

Day 3 (Monday 3/10)

• Depart Memphis 
• Delta Blues Museum (Clarksdale, MS)
• Crossroads (819 Desoto Ave, Clarksdale, MS)
• Depart Clarksdale, MS for Greenville, MS
• Jim’s Café for lunch 
• Levee walk, Percy Street, Greenville Cemetery
• Warfield Point State Park 
• Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge (Vidalia, LA)
• Camp out at Natchez State Park

Day 4 (Tuesday 3/11)

• Pack up, breakfast at the Donut Shop Natchez 
• Grand Village of the Natchez Indians 
• Frogmore Cotton Plantation and Gin (Frogmore, LA)
• Lunch, drive south
• Old River Control Structure tour with US Army Corp of Engineers
• Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge (Lottie, LA)
• Dinner in Baton Rouge
• Check in to Baton Rouge

Day 5 (Wednesday 3/12)

• Breakfast, depart hotel 
• Plantation sightseeing drive along River Rd., west side of Big Muddy
• Oak Alley Plantation
• Bonnet Carre Spillway
• Depart for New Orleans 
• Lunch at the Gumbo Shop
• National Wildlife Federation Office/Driving Tour (Bayou Bienvenue, Lower 9^th Ward, St. Bernard Parish, Arpent/Paris Rd. levee, spillway)
• Check in to Josephine Lofts

Day 6 (Thursday 3/13)

• Depart lofts
• Volunteer project and hike at Barataria Preserve, Jean LaFitte National Historic Park and Preserve
• Lunch
• Drive to Grand Isle, LA!! 
• Camp at Grand Isle State Park

Day 7 (Friday 3/14)

• Pack up and return to New Orleans 
• Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Lighthouse Museum
• Open day for students
• Dinner at Mulates (New Orleans, LA)

Day 9 (Saturday 3/15)

• 8am Drive to LFC

 

Chicago ➡ New Orleans
