The Most Productive Freshwater* System in North America: The Atchafalaya Drainage Basin

*The Atchafalaya Drainage Basin is largely freshwater, in some areas the water is often brackish or even salty.

Watersheds

A flushed toilet in the southwestern part of Montana and agricultural runoff from the burned over district in the western part of New York have something in common.

Both of these areas are located in the Mississippi River Drainage Basin. The water generated from both sources flows, over thousands of miles, to the same outlet.

This common outlet is at the mouth of the Mississippi River at the River Delta in the southern part of Louisiana where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

This is both the result of the enormousness of a drainage basin and the simplicity of the gravitational pull from one point to another.

Heavy blocks of text are hard to read. And important facts can get lost along the way. Along with short paragraphs, headings help web readers find their place and absorb information more quickly. As a general rule, there ought to be a heading for every 125 or so words. As you can see from this page, using them more often works too.

Links in text

Links within the text are important means of guiding your users to important info. They limit duplicate information and help keep visitors moving to key content throughout the site. You can also add a “Related Links” list to highlight additional pages or programs.
