Notes from Abroad: Trentyn in New Zealand
Trentyn Tyson '25, a double major in computer science and data science, studied abroad this past semester at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
Studying abroad in Dunedin, New Zealand was an amazing opportunity for me! Being a computer science and data science double major did not overly limit my ability to travel across the world, and experience new things, and the University of Otago was able to fit all my academic needs, as well as opening my eyes to a different way of living life.
Adjusting to the Kiwi culture was easy, the country in itself is full of the nicest and most understanding people that I have met in my life.
I was fortunate enough to take a wide variety of classes, which each had a plethora of unique and immersive experiences within them. Whether it be testing for cholesterol in Human Nutrition, preventative surveying for potential natural disasters, improving on a giant computer science database, or taking a step outside the classroom to see the story geological features tell, the classes were very enjoyable.
My studies did not limit the adventures I was able to go on all around the country, such as ziplining down the worlds steepest zipline in Queenstown, being able to see New Zealand’s natural geological wonder in Milford Sound, or simply catching New Zealand’s national rugby team, called the All-Blacks. There was much to do close and far from Dunedin and the best part is, you don’t have to look hard for them.
The most impactful part to my whole experience with the University of Otago, was having the pleasure of living with great people who not only were just as interested in learning about the country around us, but also being able to experience a piece of their different cultures as well!
