Shahreen Sadeque '25, a double major in economics and international relations with a minor in Chinese, studied abroad in Germany.

During my time abroad, I embarked on a transformative journey that encompassed diverse experiences, personal growth, and immersion into a new culture. Among the myriad of remarkable memories, one stands out as my favorite aspect of the program – the opportunity to forge lasting connections with people from around the world. Engaging with fellow students from different backgrounds enriched my understanding of global perspectives, fostering an atmosphere of intellectual exchange and mutual learning. Whether through lively classroom discussions or casual conversations over a cup of coffee, I cherished the insights and friendships formed during my time abroad. These connections not only broadened my horizons but also created a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

As for my courses, they provided a unique blend of academic rigor and practical knowledge. The curriculum challenged me to think critically, expanding my intellectual capacities and enhancing my problem-solving skills. The faculty's expertise and passion for teaching were infectious, making each class a truly enriching experience. Through coursework that intertwined theory and real-world application, I gained a deeper appreciation for my chosen field and a newfound confidence in my abilities. Adjusting to a new culture presented its own set of challenges and rewards. Initially, the differences felt overwhelming, from language barriers to unfamiliar customs. However, as I immersed myself in the local community, I began to adapt and embrace the cultural changes. I discovered that stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me to learn and appreciate different perspectives, fostering personal growth and a sense of global citizenship. Having lived in over three countries, I believe that excursions played a vital role in enhancing my abroad experience. Exploring historical landmarks, natural wonders, and cultural sites deepened my understanding of Europe’s rich heritage. Each excursion served as a reminder of the immense beauty and diversity our world has to offer.

Most importantly, my time abroad facilitated significant personal growth. Navigating unfamiliar environments, overcoming obstacles, and adapting to new circumstances expanded my resilience and self-confidence. I learned to approach challenges with an open mind and a willingness to embrace change, leading to personal breakthroughs that will continue to shape my future endeavors. I believe that every element of my study abroad program had a teachable impact on me. It cultivated a sense of cultural appreciation, broadened my academic and personal horizons, and empowered me to become a more empathetic and globally aware individual. As I reflect on my time abroad, I am grateful for the memories, experiences, and personal growth it has bestowed upon me. This transformative journey has left an indelible mark on my life, equipping me with a deeper understanding of the world and a renewed sense of purpose. I eagerly look forward to applying the valuable lessons learned during my time in Germany in all my future endeavors.
