Neema Lwande '22, a double major in Business and Asian Studies, studied abroad at the University of Seoul in South Korea.

Being in South Korea over this summer has exposed me to a culture that is different and yet similar to my own. As a Kenyan girl growing up, I would have never thought nor imagined myself being given the opportunity to explore a country we beautiful as South Korea.

During my time here, I was able to visit historical sights, filled with culture and stories. I was able to visit the palaces in Seoul  and I was able to travel to other major cities Busan and Incheon and explore the differences it had in comparison to the capital.

Busan had much to offer, the beach was breath taking and the tourist attractions and activities were beyond fun. I was able to visit the Museum Da, and art exposition of lights and exhibits. Its an interactive experience that you can enjoy with your friends, and enjoy the light exhibits and art exhibits. Taking pictures here with your friends is also a great activity to do whilst in Busan. Although Korea is a small country, raveling across Korea you will learn a lot about the different dialects it has. Learning Korean as a language itself has been fun, personally I found it easier than any other language I have learnt.

My favorite memory of Seoul however is the food. As a person who enjoys different cultural food and enjoys cooking, experiencing Korean food, it’s different flavors it had to offer, and cuisine styles has been the highlight of my time in here. Korean bbq , samgyeopsal ( grilled pork belly) has obviously been the highlight of my food journey however other dishes such as bulgogi (marinated meat ) , Jjajangnyeon ( black bean noodles), Samgyetang ( soup with a whole stuffed chicken), Galbi ( ribs), naengmyeon (cold noodles)  are at the top of my list of Korean foods that I got to try. However what I got enjoy with my friends the most is Chimaek (chicken and beer), I personally do not enjoy beer, but Korean fried chicken is the best chicken I have had so far, they offer different types of flavors and it is usually super crispy and can be drenched in different sauces and spice levels. Some Korean dishes tend to be super spicy.

Overall my experience here has been great and I would recommend everyone to visit South Korea at least once in their life if they are ever given the opportunity as I was.
