Natalie Kamau '24, a biology major with a double minor in gender, sexuality, & women's studies and public policy, studied abroad at the University of Roehampton in England.

When they say London is the city that never sleeps, I can now say I completely agree. Studying in London for the past 6 months has been the most exhilarating, beautiful and reflective experience. From the amazing public transport that can get you anywhere you want to go, to the diverse cultures you see at across the streets of Leicester square and the vibrant night scenery.

I have been able to travel across the United Kingdom to cities such as Luton. Leeds and Nottingham and countries like Northern Ireland and Scotland which I would have never thought to visit if I were not studying in London. Not a week goes by without me seeing Kensington Palace, Big Ben, London Eye, Tower Hill and Buckingham Palace, as they were just in my vicinity, now it is safe to say that I am considered as a “Londoner.” Studying abroad has really taught me about independence. Usually, I would rely on my friends to go restaurants, cafés and even walk to class together , however, it is different in a foreign country where with having not many friends, you are meant to do such activities on your own.

At first it was difficult, and I did feel lonely at times, however, as time went by, I found the beauty in it. I am now able to confidently sit alone at a restaurant and enjoy my food all alone or walk down Piccadilly Circus and take the underground trains without the fear of missing my stop.
