Notes from Abroad: Mohamed in Scotland
Mohamed Nisham '26, a communication major with a cinema studies minor, is studying abroad in Scotland.
The duration I spent so far in my study abroad experience has been very grounding. I use this word specifically because I have been having a very interesting time in my life trying to navigate where I belong within the world. Ever since I came to Edinburgh, Scotland for my ISEP Exchange Program, I can confidently say that I have found my place but also that my feet belong on the ground as I have had much time to think, reflect, and constructively appreciate the world. While Edinburgh can be an exciting city for young people with its demographic primarily consisting of students, I have found that the quiet hours of this city is what I truly appreciate. I have been studying in boarding schools for the past three and a half years in different places all over the world, but this was the first time I truly felt like I was on my own. I think the most defining part of my study abroad experience has been how unprepared I was actually to move to a completely new country and how I’ve been able to adapt to that difficulty. Beyond this, I have also had the chance to travel to other places within the region such as the Republic of Ireland and parts of England. The memories from these travels are ones that I will have with me for many years to come. Studying abroad is a very rewarding experience if you are willing to make new friends, engage in conversations you may not be used to, and to adapt to a completely different modus operandi of the world.
