Lwandle Dlamini '25, a SOAN and international relations double major with a digital media design minor, is studying abroad in Milan, Italy this semester.

Envision a star unfolding its light in the velvet of the evening sky and discovering it has potential to light up the environment that surrounds it. Studying abroad in Milan has felt nothing short of a transcendent and exhilarating journey filled with transformative experiences. Whilst adjusting to life in a bustling metropolis like Milan initially felt overwhelming, navigating a new language and culture without familiar faces, amidst the challenges, I found warmth and welcome in the Italian community.

One of the highlights of my program has been my sociology electives, which are both focused on fashion. Immersed in the fashion capital, my professors' expertise has reignited my passion for sociology, providing insights into the intricate intersections of culture and industry. I have felt honoured to be in this city as my field trips have extended to magazine archives in Lake Como and guided visits to the Prada Foundation. Each day in Milan unfolds as a new excursion, with every street offering a unique glimpse into the city's diverse tapestry.

Surrounded by art and architectural wonders, my dreams of a career in the art industry have flourished. From the affordable museums and experiences like the city's free annual design week to the Duomo and piazzas scattered across the city, I have been provided boundless creative inspiration. Yet, even beyond professional aspirations, this journey has been a catalyst for my personal growth in nurturing a positive outlook and hunger for adventure. From leisurely moments in parks to savouring new cuisines, every aspect of this program has left an indelible mark, feeding not just my intellect but my soul.

Thank you to the G. Dale Smith, and Ruth Peterson Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund for supporting me in this journey.
