Notes from Abroad: Kotryna in Thailand

Kotryna '24, a neuroscience and Asian studies: Chinese concentration double major, is studying abroad this semester in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
My time in Thailand so far has been a whirlwind of experiences. From lost luggage to adjusting to a new cuisine to making so many new connections. While I have spent the most time on my Chinese language program, my Muay Thai class has been the highlight of this trip. I have always been fascinated with martial arts and getting to learn Muay Thai in its country of origin has been extremely rewarding. The coach made every day in the gym an exciting experience. While he was serious about teaching us the basic principles, moves and combos of Muay Thai, he would also joke around with us, introduce us to his Thai students. Seeing our coach enjoy teaching us has motivated me and my friends to come back even after the official class is over.
Moreover, our program has a Thai buddy system where selected Thai students are introduced to us during orientation and are there for us throughout our time here. Meeting these people has been an amazing experience. They have helped us understand the culture better, shown us the hidden gems in the city, and in general have become great friends. From going out to the local restaurants to trekking to the local waterfalls, these experiences wouldn’t have been the same without the people I have met here.
So far, my study abroad experience has been an invaluable time that has challenged me in many ways, fostering both academic and personal growth. I have learned a lot about connecting with people, cultural and personal differences and have hopefully formed long lasting relationships. This experience would not have been possible without the support from Ingrid H. and George L. Speros scholarship, and I am extremely grateful to be the recipient of the scholarship.
