Lake Forest College, located just north of Chicago, invites applications for the full-time position of Maintenance Mechanic.

Position Summary

This position utilizes trade skills to perform preventive maintenance and corrective repair of building systems for their safe, efficient and proper operation. This role might direct vendors and subcontractors during projects.

Position Responsibilities:

• Repairs electrical systems and circuits following electrical safety procedures.
• Troubleshoots short circuits, grounding issues, etc. of single- or three-phase AC circuits. Replaces outlets, switches, lighting ballasts, circuit breakers, motor control starters, motors, etc. Organizes the preventive maintenance program for all electrical equipment.
• Troubleshoots and repairs heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and basic refrigeration cycle.
• Performs preventive maintenance for all building mechanical equipment such as air handlers, pumps, variable air volume units, etc. Must be proficient in building automation systems (BAS) such as adjustments to set points, start-up and temperature controls.
• Responds to HVAC calls; makes repairs or adjustments as needed. Tests and adjusts chemical treatment levels in open/closed loop water systems. Performs inspections on chillers; makes adjustments and records findings.
• Replaces belts, motors, bearings, actuators and valves on all mechanical equipment. Adjusts pneumatic or direct digital control (DDC) controllers and actuators for proper operation.
• Understanding of life safety systems. May need to identify and respond to fire alarms and trouble calls; properly enables or disables points. Conducts inspections of emergency generator and fire pumps and records results.
• Makes recommendations for outside service as appropriate.

Qualifications:  

• Ability to safely and properly use of tools: ladders, lifts, basic hand tools, multimeters, amp probes, anemometers (airflow meter and hood), pressure gauges, drain augers, plungers, safety goggles, ear protection and fire extinguishers.
• Ability to spend time working with mechanical and electrical equipment both indoors and outdoors and be exposed to frequent hot, cold, wet and noisy conditions.
• Knowledge and understanding of OSHA regulations related to the boiler facility operations.
• Skill in cleaning, repairing and maintaining boilers and related equipment; in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment used in stationary engineering.
• Knowledge of and proficiency in the operation of heavy equipment such as chillers, generators, switchgears, pumps, air handling units, etc.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Self-sufficiency in computer technology including email systems, mobile smart phones, memos and spreadsheets.
• Must be available for after-hours and weekend assignments or emergency calls. Exceptions, such as during scheduled time off, will be arranged via the Mechanical Supervisor.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
