On a recent episode of The 21st podcast, K. & H. Montgomery Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies Courtney Joseph shared her expert insight on the history and influence of hip hop in Illinois.

The episode of the podcast The 21st, which aired on January 31, 2023, was titled “Hip hop’s history in Illinois and America.”

“Since I started at the College in 2017, my public facing work has grown tremendously, making my scholarship overall more relevant and enticing to folks inside and outside the classroom,” Joseph shared. “Whether it is talking at the Field Museum, the Newberry Library, on NBC Channel 5 News, or NPR, I know that I am reaching new audiences who can learn about my work and about the exciting new scholarship coming out of Lake Forest College.”

The 21st is an Illinois news talk show produced by Illinois Public Media. It airs on six NPR member stations across the state.

“I hope that listeners realize that hip hop is a culture with a rich history that has global reach,” Joseph shared. “Far from just a fad, hip hop has stood the test of time and is finally being seriously and rigorously examined within the academy. I am happy to be part of this cohort of scholars.”
