Poetics of Violence: Artist Talk with Adela Goldbard

Mar 2024
28

4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Tarble Room, Brown Hall

Adela Goldbard is an artist and filmmaker who investigates how radical community performances can subvert the imposition of official narratives and how performances of violence and destruction can become aesthetic tools of resistance against power. She is an associate professor at the Rhode Island School of Design.

In her talk, Goldbard will share her recent practice, focusing on its interdisciplinary nature, research-driven approach, and collaborative approach, as well as her critical use of staging and reenactment and exploration of violence as a conduit for collective memory. Within this, she will discuss the influence that effigy burning rituals have had in her work, and will expand on how she interweaves traditional textiles, pottery, woodwork, and pyrotechnics with video, sound, sculpture, and photography for the creation of layered installations and performances.
