Ahmad Sadri to discuss enduring power of Shahnameh in NYC Public Library event

Gorter Professor of Islamic World Studies and Professor of Sociology Ahmad Sadri, a distinguished translator and scholar of Persian literature, will participate in a special event exploring the enduring legacy of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh in the New York Public Library on March 12.

On the occasion of the upcoming publication of his translation of the Complete Shahnameh (Epic of the Persian Kings) on March 18, 2025, Sadri will participate in a discussion about the epic’s enduring power. Sadri’s previous version of the Shahnameh was a best seller and is still in print.

cover of Shahnameh The Shahnameh is one of the most important works in Persian literature, chronicling the mythic and historical foundations of Iran. Though it is widely known in Persian-speaking communities, it remains relatively unfamiliar to many Western audiences.

Sadri’s acclaimed translation has played a pivotal role in making this literary masterpiece more accessible, preserving both its poetic brilliance and historical significance.

While in-person tickets for the New York Public Library event have sold out, livestream access is still available, allowing audiences everywhere to engage with this extraordinary conversation on Persian history, literature, and performance.
