How did you explore your interests and decide on a major/majors?

I had been taking Chinese since 4th grade and Lake Forest gave me the opportunity to start at my level of ability and explore the culture.

Describe a moment or experience you had in college that helped define your career path.

My student teaching internship really solidified that I wanted a career in education- being able to student teach in both 1st and 4th grade allowed me to explore different ages and curriculum levels. I also really enjoyed taking part in the Chinese club. It showed me how fun it can be to be in a club for Chinese culture, and it encouraged me to try and start my own Chinese club for my students!

What steps did you take at Lake Forest College to prepare for your career?

The education program heavily prepares you for lesson planning, interviews, and experience working with students. I felt extremely prepared on my first day as a teacher because of this program.

What role did your internship or research experience (or study abroad) play in shaping your career path?

The education fieldwork path allowed me to teach before entering my student teaching; this gave me a leg up and extra levels of preparation.

What would you recommend Lake Forest College students considering a career in your field do to prepare?

The professional preparation that Lake Forest College gives education majors is incredible. There is so much you experience every day as an educator that school cannot prepare you for, so ask questions! Reach out to your professors and cooperating teachers to really understand the education process.

How did the Department of Modern Languages, other department, Career Advancement Center and/or the Forester community give you an edge on taking your first steps after graduation?

My professors were all there for me and super supportive after graduation. Professor Steinseifer helped me get the job I have today.

What have you found the most rewarding in your career and life after graduation?

Running into fellow educators that have also attended Lake Forest and sharing our experiences has been really amazing. Also, being part of the Waukegan school district, I see a lot of student teachers, and it is so exciting to see them in the same process that I went through.
