"As a southwest side Chicago resident, I grew up in the dark about the environmental disparities surrounding us. Continuous learning about environmental injustices not just in my neighborhood but everywhere around the world saddened me because it felt like a problem being ignored with no solution. However, the ES department provided me with hope for change through my education and connections to people who ushered change in neighborhoods like mine. With the help of the ES department, I have been able to make connections with organizations based in the Chicago like the Sweet Water Foundation who've been able to reconnect their community to nature sacred spaces and knowledge on urban ecology. The many connections and experiences gained at LFC are pushing me forward to helping create a healthier future for everyone."
