Unfinished

August 31 - September 30, 2017

Making art is a dynamic process of experimentation and change. Artists and designers test their ideas before setting out to make the finished product. Preparatory works, known as “studies,” are exciting to look at because they reveal the active mind of the artist engaged in creative discovery. A flurry of marks on a sheet of sketchbook paper conveys how quickly the brain and hand can move together.

Although this exhibition focuses on drawings, every artistic medium has its own version of the unfinished study. Architects make blueprints, ceramists do multiple firings, printers and photographers use proofs, industrial designers fabricate prototypes, and on and on.
