Tabitha Andrews '23, a history major with a sociology & anthropology minor, studied abroad this semester in Italy on the AIFS Florence program.

My study abroad journey in Italy has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Florence has given me so many laughs, tears, and new adventures that have dramatically changed my outlook on the world around me. At the beginning of the program, I struggled adjusting to being so far away from home and felt like a fish out of water in the Italian culture. But that’s the great thing about Italy, the people. Italians are so welcoming and loving and pretty soon Florence became my new home. My perfect day in Florence always involved exploring, good food, great company, and art. I frequently visited the Giardini di Boboli and Piti Palace because I loved the combination of architecture, art, nature, and the history you experienced when visiting. Oh the history, how could I forget? The biggest influence in my decision to visit Italy was because of the country’s long and engaging history. Being able to walk on centuries old roads, visit renaissance-style palaces, explore extraordinary churches, and walk among ancient ruins were bucket list goals finally being checked off.

While in Italy I visited Rome, Bologna, Venice, Siena, Pisa, Certaldo, Perugia, Cinque Terre, and Fiesole. My favorite Italian city had to be Siena, for all its medieval architecture and beautiful views. I also had the opportunity to visit Athens in Greece for spring break. It was such an incredible experience and I enjoyed seeing the differences between Greek and Italian culture. Many of the journeys I took were solo adventures of internal growth and exploration of self. Now, heading back to the U.S. feels scary and exciting at the same time. But I am grateful to come home with a fresh new outlook on my future and a million stories to tell my friends and family. I want to say thank you to Lake Forest College for giving me the opportunity to study abroad and thank you to Ingrid H. and George L. Speros and all the donors to Lake Forest College.
