How did you explore your interests and decide on a major/majors? (particularly in languages, combined with other academic interests).
When I was young, I always had an interest in foreign languages and other cultures. I began learning French at the age of 12 and continued learning about French and French culture, which led to my interest in study abroad and obtaining a career where I could use my French skills and study abroad experience, as I do at Rotary International.
Describe a moment or experience you had in college that helped define your career path (coursework, internship, study abroad, student organization, etc.).
My college French professors always encouraged me to do my best. The defining moment in my career path was when I had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris, France through Lake Forest College Study Abroad Program.
What steps did you take at Lake Forest College to prepare for your career?
I took as many French language/linguistic and cultural studies courses as I could. I also had a keen interest in Psychology, so I could learn to work with people and also learn from them.
What role did your internship or research experience (or study abroad) play in shaping your career path?
I discovered that I wanted to either work as a college professor or with an international organization that helps others in need. I now work for Rotary International, a leading humanitarian organization that does good in the world. We help Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty through Rotary Grants, among other humanitarian programs. I have been using my French with this organization for years to communicate with Rotary members and scholars from Francophone Canada and Africa, as well as France.
What would you recommend Lake Forest College students considering a career in your field do to prepare?
Pursue an opportunity to study abroad. I truly believe my study abroad experience and French language skills were the main deciding factors in being hired to work at Rotary International.
How did the Department of Modern Languages, other department, Career Advancement Center and/or the Forester community give you an edge on taking your first steps after graduation?
After graduation, I did enlist the help of the Lake Forest College Career Advancement Center to prepare my resume and search for job opportunities.
What have you found the most rewarding in your career and life after graduation?
Simply working to make a small difference in the lives of others by administering international grants at a non-profit organization that does so much good in the world. I have been working at Rotary International for 25 years.
