When the Schuler Foundation closed, leaving Lake Forest College’s 24 Schuler Scholars without their annual $2,500 scholarships and health insurance coverage, Trustees Diana Moore and Liam Connell stepped in to help.

Moore and Connell, along with other Trustees and friends of the College, quickly mobilized to make up for the $278,000 in lost funding, just weeks before the Fall 2024 semester began.

“These students are Pell-eligible, high-achieving scholars from Lake County, and we knew they would thrive at Lake Forest College,” Moore said.

“It was crucial to ensure they had the financial support they needed,” Connell said.

A College supporter, who wishes to remain anonymous, felt the same way.

“I was very happy to help rectify this injustice and meet the needs of these deserving young people.”

“I was disturbed by the news that 24 Lake Forest College students were about to lose their dreams of a college degree when the Schuler Scholar Program discontinued their scholarships,” they said. “The imminent start of the fall term made it even more difficult for the students and the College to find alternative funds. I was very happy to help rectify this injustice and meet the needs of these deserving young people.”

The quick response from Moore and Connell ensured that the College’s Schuler Scholars could continue their education without disruption, thanks to the generosity of the College’s alumni and Trustees.

This initiative highlights Lake Forest College’s deep commitment to improving social mobility, a mission for which the College has ranked #1 nationally by U.S. News & World Report for the past two years. Supporting these scholars reflects the College’s ongoing effort to ensure every student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to succeed.
