Assistant Professor of French Tessa Sermet was interviewed by Moroccan cultural podcast “Variations” on 2M Radio Morocco, one of the most popular online radio stations in the country.

Sermet was interviewed about her research on “Snowpiercer,” a French graphic novel published in 1982 and adapted to the big screen by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho in 2013.

The podcast episode focused on apocalyptic scenarios, where devastating freezing storms or extreme weather events can precipitate cataclysmic events. Guests talked about graphic novels, films, tv shows, science, and how popular culture warns about the effects of global warming.

“I’m honored to be featured in this episode of ‘Variation’ because of my research on French science fiction,” Sermet said. “In ‘Snowpiercer,’ the extreme weather and the train are metaphors about climate change and the failures of capitalism. It is also a warning: if we don’t act, we might end stuck in a system that hurts us, like the people in that train.”
