Notes from Abroad: Zaynab Alnuwayri in Morocco
Zaynab Alnuwayri '26, a Mathematics and Data Science: Finance and Economics double major studied abroad at Al Akhawayn University.
My semester in Morocco has been an unforgettable journey filled with moments of personal growth, cultural discovery, and endless joy. Among my favorite memories is traveling to Agadir to watch Morocco play against Gabon in the AFCON qualifiers. It was my first-ever soccer game, and the energy in the stadium was electric. Sharing this experience with fellow exchange students I had only met a week earlier made it even more special, as we bonded over our shared excitement and the passion of Moroccan fans.
Another highlight of my time here was an excursion led by my Numerical Analysis professor. We embarked on a hike through the stunning Atlas Mountains, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the region. Along the way, we visited a Berber village, where we were welcomed with warm hospitality and shared meals with local families. This experience deepened my appreciation for the resilience and traditions of the Amazigh people and provided a unique perspective on life in rural Morocco.
Being back in North Africa has also been incredibly impactful for me. After spending so much time away from home, there’s a certain comfort in being in a place that feels familiar; the rhythm of life, the sounds of Arabic dialects, and the warmth of the people all reminded me of home in the best way possible.
And then there were the cats. Morocco’s furry companions quickly became a delightful part of my daily life. Whether I was having lunch at a café or walking through the medina, these curious creatures were always there to share a meal or a moment of affection.
This semester has been an extraordinary blend of academic challenges, cultural immersion, and heartfelt connections. Morocco has left an indelible mark on me, and I know I’ll carry these memories and lessons with me long after I leave.
