Notes from Abroad: Shelton in Thailand
Shelton Mudzingwa '25, an Economics and Asian Studies: Chinese Concetration double major studied abroad at Chiang Mai University
My time in Chiang Mai, Thailand, studying at Chiang Mai University (CMU), has been an extraordinary chapter of personal and academic growth. Immersing myself in a new environment, culture, and way of life has broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of the world.
Growing up l always knew that my passion was to travel while learning about the different languages and cultures l will be exposed to. The academic program at CMU was both challenging and engaging, offering courses in Chinese and Asian studies that deepened my knowledge of the region. However, what truly set my experience apart were the incredible field trips organized by the program. These excursions provided invaluable opportunities to explore the heart of Thai culture, history, and traditions in ways that no classroom setting could replicate. Whether it was visiting ancient temples, bustling markets, or serene countryside locations, each trip was a new adventure that brought the richness of Thai heritage to life.
Among all the experiences, the overnight field trip to a hill tribe village stands out as the most memorable and impactful. Spending time with the local community, learning about their way of life, and sharing meals and stories by the fire gave me a profound appreciation for their resilience and traditions. I also felt at home as most of their traditions and culture were similar to those of my tribal village in Zimbabwe. The warmth and hospitality of the villagers made me feel welcome, while their simple yet fulfilling lifestyle reminded me of the beauty of living in harmony with nature. They taught us how they make their clothes from scratch including what material they use, how they process it, how they implement their unique tribal design and style and much more. It was a humbling and eye-opening experience that left a lasting impression on me, encouraging me to reflect on my values and priorities.
Living in Chiang Mai itself was an unforgettable experience. The city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity offered something new to discover every day. From exploring vibrant night bazaars to savoring the diverse and flavorful Thai cuisine, there was always a sense of excitement and discovery.
I am immensely grateful for the chance to study and grow in such a vibrant and welcoming environment. The memories I have made and the lessons I have learned during my time in Chiang Mai will stay with me forever. I hope to return to Thailand in the future to further explore its beauty and reconnect with the people and places that have left such a deep impact on my life.
