DEI Summit Event Schedule

Inaugural Event: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi in Conversation, and Initial Cohort Meetings

Wednesday 31 March, 4:30 pm-6:00 pm

4:30-5:35 pm:  All Summit participants will attend a conversation between Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities and the Director and Founder of the Center for Anti-Racism Research at Boston University and Dr. RL Watson, Assistant Professor of English and African American Studies at Lake Forest College.

5:35-5:45 pm: 10 minute break

5:45-6:00 pm: Summit participants will move into breakout rooms to meet their small group cohort, assign roles and select materials for upcoming discussions, and schedule two cohort meetings that will take place at times of your group's choosing between 1 April and 13 April.  As a reminder: the Summit Planning Committee will provide materials for cohorts to read and discuss, although the cohorts are welcome to branch out and seek further common readings.  The purpose of the cohort discussions is,  first, to develop a deeper understanding of particular issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion; and  second, to agree upon commitments that members intend to implement in their work/learning at the College.

Enrichment Event: Dr. Mesmin Destin, Northwestern University

Thursday 8 April, 4:30-6:00 pm

All Summit participants are invited to join Dr. Mesmin Destin, Associate Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University, as he discusses research studies from his lab that offer concrete steps that institutions of higher education, such as Lake Forest College, might take to become more equitable for students of color and first-generation college students.  Your cohort can choose to attend this event as one of your planned activities, or Summit participants can choose to attend individually.

Closing Event: What We’ve Learned and Where We’re Going

Wednesday 14 April, 4:30-6:00 pm

All Summit participants will gather once more to share what they learned in their cohort and what commitments to change they have made. Participants will leave the Summit with concrete ways that they can increase equity and inclusion in their corner of the College, having learned from their common readings, from the presentations, and from their conversations with each other.

If you want to be part of this exciting series of events, we need you to register by filling out this survey.  Please do so by 15 March at noon.  We need this information so we can place you in a cohort with folks who share your priorities and concerns.  Even if you intend to attend the Summit as part of a group commitment (by a department, an athletic team, a club, etc.) we need you to fill out an  individual registration survey.
