Five Foresters got to see what it’s like to use their networking and collaboration skills to compete in the CFA Institute Research Challenge—an annual global competition that provides college students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.
“I think this challenge gave me some good experience and a taste of what working in the field of finance will entail,” George Argiropoulos ’19 said. “I learned just how much detail and time it takes to create a report like this and what is important to look for when you analyze companies.”
Argiropoulos worked with Pat Biewald ’19, Davis DeKorte ’18, Hannah O’Day ’19 and Ethan Webster ’19 to research their assigned company and then create a financial report and recommendation for the College’s first entry in this esteemed competition.
“Personally, I wanted to gain more exposure to finance,” O’Day said about why he participated. “This challenge also gave me several professional connections I wouldn’t have made otherwise.”
The Lake Forest team submitted their first-round document to a committee at CFA Society of Chicago on January 19. If they place high enough, they will present their findings in front of an expert panel in Chicago on February 23.
By competing in the CFA Challenge, these students not only learned about equity research, but they were also able to showcase their ability to compete with other prestigious colleges.
“The Chicago CFA Society offers substantial networking opportunities, and our participation has raised awareness of the College and our students within the Chicago investment community,” finance faculty member Stewart Foley said of the group. Foley is the Special Advisor on the Practice of Finance.
