This paper discussed the informal financial services used by the hundreds of millions of people lacking access to formal banking services. Most common are rotating savings and credit associations (RoSCAs) and village savings and loan associations (VSLAs). Other alternative financial services include 5-6 lending schemes in the Philippines, susu collectors in Ghana, and moneyguards in Bangladesh and South Africa. This multi-disciplinary, multi-country event was attended by professors from Brazil, China, India, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, and the United States.  

Professor Dlabay also participated in the “Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) Summit” at the University of Michigan. This event brought together professors and global development practitioners to consider actions to enhance business development among people living on $2 or less a day.
