Notes from Abroad: Khayrulla in London

Notes from Abroad is a new feature on the Off-Campus Programs website, in which we highlight small snippets of a student’s experience. This week’s feature is from Khayrulla Azamov ’15, a business major pursuing a minor in digital media design, currently studying abroad at ISA London.
I am studying in London for the fall 2015 term. I am grateful for the scholarship from the Smith foundation, which contributed toward my studies abroad and enabled me to meet new people, to learn about a new culture, and to be familiar with totally different education system.
So far everything has been great here in London; I have visited so many places such as Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, Brighton Pier and Royal Pavilion (Brighton), and many more. Besides those wonderful sights, London offers wide variety of restaurants and cafes, parks, museums, and many more.
Before coming to the UK, I knew that London is a diverse city but did not expect it to be so diverse. I was impressed when I heard that only third of London’s population has actually British origin. Also, I really enjoy underground tubes (subway) because it makes my daily trip to any place a lot faster. Even though there are busses I believe that underground tube is the most used type of transportation here in London. Especially during rush hours it becomes so crowded that people will have to wait just to get in the tube station.
Since coming to London I have met so many people from different parts of the world such as Japan, Palestine, India, etc. It is so interesting to learn about people from other parts of the world and learn something new about their culture.
Also, I was surprised by the education system here. It is totally the opposite of Lake Forest College. It seems like you have lots of free time, but if you do not do extra studying and research outside the lecture and seminars you are doomed to fail. However, I am determined that I would succeed in all of my classes and I will everything it takes to succeed. Also, I hope I will have a chance and time to travel all around London and some parts of the UK.
Cheers,
Khayrulla
