Writing Center

The Writing Center offers free tutorial assistance, information and resources at every stage of the writing process for all students who want to become better writers.

A staff of well-qualified peer tutors represents a wide spectrum of disciplines and provides a variety of services: guidance in better organization, outlining, and editing; help with grammar, punctuation, word choice, style, and manuscript preparation; assistance in writing for non-native speakers. Peer tutoring is available for students at every level of competency who want to improve their written expression in any discipline. Discussion, consultation and informal meetings on issues of writing and pedagogy across the curriculum are held for faculty. Workshops and guest speakers are presented to encourage professional interest in writing and to promote academic excellence for all.

Consultation is available for daily response papers, short papers, laboratory reports, journal writing, research papers, senior theses, cover letters, statements of purpose, letters of application, and a variety of creative writing projects.

Peer tutoring is available for all members of the campus community during regular hours six days a week, Sunday through Friday. Standing appointments are available for students who wish to work regularly with a specific tutor, but such scheduling must be made with the approval of the Director of Writing Programs. Drop-in clients are welcomed on a first-come, first-served basis, but students are strongly encouraged to schedule appointments well in advance by phoning the Writing Center at ext. 5233.

The Writing Center also provides free handouts on various aspects of writing. A well-stocked library of style manuals and other reference materials may be consulted in the tutoring offices, located in Johnson B 178. These materials cover the needs of all disciplines taught at the College.
