Students, faculty, and staff honored at 2024 Leadership Awards

The Gates Center honors individual student leaders and student organizations at the Student Leadership Awards Ceremony each spring. This year, seventeen awards were presented to students, faculty, staff, and student organizations.

This year's ceremony took place in Calvin Durand Hall on Monday, April 29. With opening remarks from President Jill Baren and awards presented by staff members of the Office of Student Affairs, the ceremony brought together various corners of campus and included a reception afterwards for all in attendance.

Honorees were nominated by the campus community and selected by committees composed of faculty, staff, and students. Congratulations to this year's recipients:

  • The Alpha Sigma Kappa Class of 1938 Memorial Prize - Arielle Jones '24
  • The Commitment to Campus Well Being Award - Wiktoria Pedryc '24
  • The Commitment to Student Development Award - RL Watson, Assistant Professor of English and African American Studies
  • The Community Builder Award - Valeria Almendares '25
  • The Jacob Wardwell Edwards Prize - Sadie Pimlott '27
  • The Make a Difference Award - Chris Meza '26
  • Peter C. Clute Award for Outstanding Character - Chelsea Davis '24
  • The Rising Star Award - Martin Ettlin Cuitino '27
  • The Student Leader of the Year Award - Emília Guilhermina de Paula Fonseca '26
  • The Student Organization President of the Year Award - Hayley Headley '24
  • The Anita Chen Li ’51 International Student Prize - Hayley Headley '24
  • The Charles F. Behling Award - Nenna Rouse '24
  • The Christopher Mojekwu Award - Gizella Meneses, Associate Dean of the Faculty, Director of the Office of Faculty Development, and Professor of Spanish and Latin American and Latinx Studies
  • The Edward H. Oppenheimer Memorial Prize - Christina Hartley '24
  • The Edward H. Oppenheimer Memorial Prize - Jake Sharifi '24
  • Collaborative Effort of the Year - Women of Color in Higher Education from UNIDAS, The Fourth Wave, and AAAPI
  • Social Justice Program of the Year - V-Redefined Week from It’s On US, UNICEF, PRIDE, The Fourth Wave, Dead Poet’s Society, AAAPI, and United Asia
