Notes from Abroad: Tamino in Fiji
Tamino Köhne '24, a double major in environmental studies and sociology & anthropology, is studying abroad in Fiji this semester.
Bula from Fiji! I have been in Suva for a few weeks now as part of the ISEP Exchange program. The rain has been quite heavy, but it is the wet season here in Fiji. I'm making the most of it by taking some interesting courses at USP. My favorite so far is Marine Management. As an Environmental Studies major focusing on marine environments, this class perfectly aligns with my academic interests. I'm learning a lot about the local marine ecosystems and how they are managed sustainably. My other favorite part of the day is my Fijian Language for Beginners class. Being able to practice the language with locals has allowed me to connect on a deeper level with the Fijian culture. I look forward to improving my language skills during my time here.
I'm still planning to explore more of Fiji's beautiful islands when the weather clears up. I hope to take a weekend trip to Beqa Island for scuba diving through the coral reefs. I also can't wait to visit Mana Island and see the sandy beaches. This program has already provided me with great academic and cultural experiences. I'm sure the next few months will open my eyes even more through excursions, and personal growth.
Vinaka vakalevu (thank you very much) to the study abroad office for providing me with this opportunity. I am grateful to be immersed in the Fijian community and to add this global perspective to my education. This experience will stay with me long after I return home.
